Sardonyx the alternate birthstone of August

If you're looking for an unusual piece of jewelry with a real sense of character, consider a sardonyx pendant or sardonyx ring. Although it is used as the alternative August birthstone, sardonyx jewelry offers features that not many other gemstones have to offer. For example, a sardonyx men's ring, popular for those men who want an August birthstone ring but do not like peridot jewelry, can come in three different colors: orange, black or green - all with a white stripe running through the stone. I gladly make sardonyx jewelry in your choice of yellow gold, white gold or sterling silver.

Sardonyx jewelry is unique because unlike many other gems, the color choices give a much wider selection as well as different properties some people believe them to have. For instance, an orange sardonyx ring is believed to stimulate while a green sardonyx earrings would be seen as purifying. Black sardonyx jewelry is believed to absorb negative energy so that it does not affect the wearer.

For a 10th anniversary, sardonyx jewelry is the traditional gift to mark the occasion. It's also been associated with the planet Saturn and also Mars since Roman times when it was believed to fuel courage and lead to victory in battle. Sardonyx jewelry is commonly thought to assist those born under the zodiac sign Leo or with strong Leo influence in their astrology chart. It's also believed to aid those seeking self control, lessening hesitation and acts as a cure for depression.

It's fitting that a stone sometimes described as 'resembling a formal business tie' due to its white striping, would considered a valuable addition to a public person's jewelry collection. Public speakers are believed to gain extra power from sardonyx jewelry when it comes to getting their message across with extra potency that would help the listeners be able to see the speaker's point of view.

We've recently added green sardonyx to our collection here at Earth's Treasures and we have large 30x40mm size cabochon cut orange sardonyx perfect for a sardonyx pendant.

The Shape of the Heart: Where did the symbol come from?

As with every Valentine's Day, people are presenting their loved ones with heart-shaped cards, candies and trinkets. But how did the heart shape become the unanimous symbol for love? The answers you'll get for this question are quite different and varied depending on who you ask.
During the seventh century B.C. in the city-state of Cyrene there was a plant called silphium that is now extinct. It was mostly used for seasoning but was also used for off-label use with things like birth control and mood enhancement. The plant was so important to the economy though, that coins were minted so that they would depict a seedpod which looked like the heart shape that we commonly know today.

One of the original and most well respected stories goes that this heart like symbol was first associated with sex and then, eventually, with love.

The Catholic Church contends that the heart shape and symbol did not appear until the 17th century, when Saint Margaret Mary Alocoque had a vision in which it was surrounded by thorns. This symbol eventually would become known as the Sacred Heart of Jesus and was associated with complete and utter love and devotion. It would begin to appear on many stained-glass windows in churches and in other church iconography. While the Sacred Heart symbol may have popularized the heart shape to the masses, the majority of scholars agree that it existed MUCH earlier than in the 1600's.

Still other accounts suggest that the modern heart symbol's origin comes from botched attempts at drawing an actual human heart. Many ancient scholars and philosophers viewed the heart as the center for all human passions. The medieval tradition of courtly love setups may have further reinforced the shape's association with the idea of romance. Indeed, the modern day heart symbol and all that it stands for could be a combination of all of these things that have occurred throughout our history.

So instead of worrying about where abouts the heart symbol came from and how we can better understand it, just enjoy that it has become an integral part of our society and buy that special someone a nice, jewelry gift littered with the heart symbol we all know and love!

The meaning of gemstone colors in jewelry fashions

Certain colors can influence our emotions in a variety of different ways. Each color has its own specific characteristics and effect on our lives. They can affect how we feel, how we act, and how we respond to other people. Many people believe that colors have underlying powers and that colored gemstones can hold these powers. Below are the meanings of our most popular jewelry by colors.

Red Jewelry
The color red is the warmest and most energetic of all the jewelry colors. It’s always associated with fire and heat, which is symbolic of passion and love as well as anger and rage. The vibrancy of the color red is very good at drawing attention, which, if used correctly can work in your favor.

Pink Jewelry
A combination of red and white, pink is a very light and delicate jewelry color. It is known worldwide as the color of love and is very good at inducing relaxation as well as calming down a tense situation.

Blue Jewelry
Dependable, trustworthy and committed, blue is one of the most popular jewelry colors around. It could be because it induces relaxation or maybe its due in part to it being the least gender specific color. The overuse of blue can come across as cold and uncaring but when used the right way can give off a soothing feeling. This calming and sedating color is right for pretty much everyone!

Green Jewelry
Second only to blue as people’s favorite jewelry color, green is one of the more peaceful and refreshing colors. This color is often used in calming techniques, relaxing the mind as well as the body, which makes it great for meditation. Green is the safest of all the colors so if you don’t know what color to wear, green is your best bet.

Yellow Jewelry
With the ability to enhance creativity, happiness, and optimism, yellow is one of the more popular jewelry colors. Probably the biggest attention grabber but can be overpowering if overdone. If you’re looking for a little bit of attention, yellow might be the color for you!

Orange Jewelry
A close relative to red, it’s not surprising that orange jewelry is associated with warmth and kindness. Radiating energy, orange often stimulates activity and encourages the exploration of new things. People who like the color orange are thought to be kind and caring.

Purple Jewelry
With a strong association with royalty, the color purple exudes an aura of wealth, sophistication and class. Purple jewelry gives off a sense of mystery and magic, it is also known to provoke imagination and inspiration in its owners. For these reasons, purple is often well liked by people with creative minds and free spirits such as artists and actors.

Brown Jewelry
Brown jewelry is considered to be the color of earth and is symbolic of solidity, reliability and conventionalism. Certain shaded of brown can create feelings of wholesomeness while others can give off a feeling of dullness and lack of creativity. Overall, brown is a very solid color that is used to show order and stability. Very popular among people in power or authoritative positions.

Black Jewelry
The color black is often considered the color of power and authority. It is also connected with rebellion, hostility and mystery. Wearing the right amount of black jewelry gives off the sense of sophistication and confidence while wearing too much can be overwhelming, evoking emotions of sadness and fear.

White Jewelry
White is the universal symbol of purity and innocence. It stands for completion, truth, openness and cleanliness. It is a wonderful choice for new beginnings and development. It invokes mental clarity and honesty, which are both calming features. White jewelry works well with every color and can be used on almost any occasion.

Grey Jewelry
A true neutral color, grey imparts a sense of void, lack of energy or emotion and a feeling of emptiness. As negative as these characteristics may sound they all attribute to the relaxing and restful aspect of grey jewelry. It is a symbol for maturity and dependability as well as security. It has a very stabilizing effect, making other vibrant colors stand out more.

Gold/Tan Jewelry
A symbol of wealth, success, good health and personal power, gold jewelry is one of our most popular colors. People who wear gold are usually optimistic and happy with their lives. Helps promote courage, confidence, and willpower to overcome obstacles.
